The short answer
- 0% VAT on buying and installing solar panels in homes in England, Scotland and Wales.
- It runs from 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2027, unless the government extends it.
- Batteries also get 0% VAT when installed with qualifying solar panels. Check with your installer for batteries added later.
- Northern Ireland has different rules: usually 20%, or 5% in some cases.
What it saves
| System | Price with 0% VAT (estimate) | If 20% VAT applied |
|---|---|---|
| 3 kW | about £5,750 | about £6,900 |
| 4.5 kW | about £7,600 | about £9,120 |
| 6 kW | about £9,500 | about £11,400 |
Should you rush?
If you were already planning solar, getting it installed before 31 March 2027 avoids the risk of VAT returning. Installers often get busy before deadlines, so it's worth getting quotes early.
